Choosing Composite Poker Chips

Choosing Composite Poker Chips

Composite poker chips are currently the most popular and widely used type of poker chip construction. Composite chips are used in both casinos and in recreational poker play. Weightless plastic chips are becoming a thing of the past besides for those very occasional home players. Clay composite chips are becoming more and more affordable and are now the preferred chip type.

Clay composite chips come in various types including dice, tri-color, suited, royal suited, deluxe pyramid and super diamond. They are available in 8 gram, 11.5 gram and 14 gram varieties. Clay composite chips are ideal as there is a metal insert in the middle of the poker chip which adds weight to it. It also makes that well known clinking sound when dropped on the table thanks to the metal insert.

ABS plastic chips are another name that some retailers use for composite poker chips. You should be aware that clay composite chips are different from ABS plastic but some retailers attempt to sell ABS as clay composite chips. The ABS types will not last as long and are not as high quality as composite clay poker chips.

When someone asks me which sort of poker chips they should buy, I also recommend clay composite poker chips, regardless of skill level or intended frequency of use. Because they are now so affordable I see no reason not to buy these composite chips as the quality far exceeds that of cheaper plastic chips. They look, feel and sound authentic and they are simply better to play with than other types of chips.
